Traditional management training courses often focus on administration and understanding day-to-day business (finance, controlling, marketing, macro- and microeconomics, etc.). They rarely address the specific topics that become more relevant in challenging situations (decision-making, human factors, information management). The "Master of Advanced Studies in Effective Leadership" ("MAS in Effective Leadership") course fills a gap here by providing the necessary skills for leadership in situations with acute pressure to act.

The "MAS in Effective Leadership" combines scientific principles and tried-and-tested methodology through a collaboration between the University of Lucerne and the Higher Cadre Training of the Armed Forces (HKA). The "MAS in Effective Leadership" is an ideal course for militia officers on the one hand, while on the other hand it is explicitly aimed at participants without a military background by teaching the content of military leadership training.

The "MAS in Effective Leadership" thus distinguishes itself on the education market through the following unique selling points:

• CAS Decision Making and Leadership
  The "CAS DM" deals with decision-making in challenging situations. On the one hand - together with the HKA - a decision-making methodology that has been tried and tested in practice is trained. On the other hand, scientific principles of leadership and decision-making are taught, enabling graduates to reflect on and further develop the decision-making behavior of themselves and others. The course is supplemented by modules on multilateral decision-making (negotiations and dialogue processes) and decision-making in change processes within an organization (change management).
• CAS Information Management and Leadership
  The "CAS in Information Management and Leadership" (CAS IM) deals with information management in challenging and complex situations. It examines the concept of information from various perspectives and relates it to leadership situations. Dealing with uncertainty and complexity is practiced using examples. The course looks at practical examples of information management concepts and demonstrates the value of "learning organizations" in contexts characterized by confusion and complexity.
• CAS Human Factors in Leadership
  The "CAS in Human Factors in Leadership" (CAS CHE) deals with human factors in challenging leadership situations. The aim is to understand the influence of human factors in extraordinary leadership situations and in high-reliability organizations and to examine interpersonal and group-dynamic processes. This is complemented by the treatment of subject-specific topics such as diversity, motivation, interpersonal conflict and context-related personnel processes.
• CAS Decisive Leadership
  The new "CAS in Decisive Leadership" (Certificate of Advanced Studies) complements the "MAS in Effective Leadership" (Master of Advanced Studies) at the University of Lucerne (UNILU), which has already been running successfully for several years, with a course tailored to participants in the compulsory "Unit Leadership Course" at the Central School (ZS) of the Armed Forces' Higher Cadre Training (HKA), which lasts several weeks. This new certificate course, which will be launched in 2022, is an ideal opportunity for prospective unit commanders to combine military leadership training with academic continuing education, further training in the field of leadership.
• MAS Effective Leadership
  Further training enables graduates to develop effective solutions to complex problems in the time available, even when there is a lack of information. The combination of research (University of Lucerne) and practice (HKA) creates ideal conditions for not only understanding leadership in challenging situations, but also for experiencing it and growing from it. The evaluation of one's own performance on the basis of a unique, multi-day application example (practical exercise) makes it possible to demonstrate personal development potential in concrete terms.
