The difference between safety officer, safety specialist and contact person for occupational safety:

• Safety officers (SiBe) are employees in the company who have acquired their specialist knowledge through specific safety officer training and have provided the required proof of performance. Safety officers act as a link between the authorities, safety specialists, management and employees and perform numerous tasks in an advisory and supportive capacity.
• Safety Specialist (often also called ASA Specialist) is a protected title and may only be held by persons who have passed the Federal Diploma of Higher Education.
• Contact person for occupational safety (KOPAS) primarily takes on an organizational role and serves as a point of contact between employees, managers and external bodies, without necessarily having specialized training. It is often used as a synonym for safety officer (SiBe).

Company managers are usually unable to perform all occupational safety tasks themselves. It is therefore common for certain tasks to be delegated to employees. To do this, they need to have the appropriate SUVA safety officer training, for which there are various levels:

• Contact person for occupational safety: KOPAS are safety officers in SMEs that are affiliated to an industry solution
• Persons with basic knowledge of occupational safety: SUVA safety officers in SMEs that are not affiliated to an industry solution
• Safety assistants (SiAs): 6-day occupational safety course completed
• Occupational safety specialists (ASA): safety experts and engineers, occupational hygienists, occupational physicians or occupational safety specialists
