Individuals with a Federal Certificate of Competence (continuing education and training / tertiary level) in metal fabrication have the opportunity, through further training to become a metal fabrication project manager with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, to run their own company or attain a management position in a larger firm within the industry. This training leads to a role that is primarily administrative and organizational in nature and involves very little hands-on work. They represent the company externally and are responsible for public relations, acquiring new clients, preparing quotes and invoices, and managing existing clients. In addition, they negotiate prices with suppliers and plan and coordinate in meetings with construction managers and architects. They are responsible for ensuring smooth operations in the technical office as well as in the workshop itself, manage projects, and design systems and products. In doing so, they identify opportunities for optimization, evaluate and implement improved processes, and review state-of-the-art process and manufacturing technologies before deciding which innovations to adopt. They also deal extensively with marketing and corporate finance. As HR managers, metal fabrication project managers oversee apprentices, handle recruitment, and hire new employees, and are well-versed in labor law.
