Biomedical analyst: key role in disease diagnosis

The professional activity of a biomedical analyst is associated with a great responsibility towards patients and doctors. These specialists analyze samples of tissue, cells and other body fluids in their medical laboratory on behalf of the prescribing doctor. They are supported by computerized measuring devices and modern precision equipment, but often also examine the samples manually and by hand. The results of an analysis are an important basis for treating physicians and specialists and enable a diagnosis and well-founded monitoring of treatments. They also form the basis for the prognosis and prevention of diseases.

Biomedical analysts often have to deliver accurate and precise work under time pressure, for example in emergencies. While working in biomedical analysis, you come into contact with a wide range of medical disciplines, such as haematology, immunohaematology, clinical chemistry and immunology, microbiology and molecular biology.

The full-time course at the higher technical college lasts three years and is offered at several locations in Switzerland. To be admitted to this course, you must have a three-year basic education, a high school diploma or comparable qualification, a good knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology, and pass the aptitude test.

Are you very interested in this varied and responsible profession and would you like more detailed information about the job itself or about training as a biomedical analyst? Are you preferably an EFZ laboratory technician specializing in biology or chemistry, an EFZ pharmaceutical assistant, an EFZ specialist or an EFZ medical practice assistant? Then this further training course could be ideal for you? You can find renowned training providers on Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch. Order free and non-binding information documents on the training courses directly from the training providers online.

They can choose from clinical chemistry and immunology, histology and cytology, microbiology, immunohaematology and transfusion medicine, haematology and haemostaseology. Admission to the Biomedical Analyst CHE course generally requires at least three years of basic training, preferably as a Pharmaceutical Assistant Federal Vocational Baccalaureate (Federal VET Diploma), Healthcare Specialist Federal Vocational Baccalaureate (Federal VET Diploma), Medical Practice Assistant Federal Vocational Baccalaureate (Federal VET Diploma) or Laboratory Technician Federal Vocational Baccalaureate (Federal VET Diploma) specializing in chemistry or biology, or the completion of a Baccalaureate, Specialized Baccalaureate or Federal Vocational Baccalaureate. Good knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics is also required, as well as passing the aptitude test.

Continuing education, further training as a biomedical analyst CHE usually takes 3 years and is completed full-time. However, you should check with the College of Higher Education of your choice to be on the safe side.

The day-to-day work of a qualified biomedical analyst CHE (BMA CHE) includes various tasks in medical laboratories, with the help of which diseases can be diagnosed and predicted and preventive measures and therapies can be implemented. They also carry out biomedical research tasks. The professional and independent analysis of samples is one of their main areas of responsibility, as is patient contact when taking blood and bone marrow samples. Depending on their chosen specialty, BMA CHE perform various laboratory analyses to analyze blood samples, determine blood groups or infectious agents, and diagnose hereditary diseases, tumors or cancers.

As a biomedical analyst with an HF diploma, you have the following responsibilities and skills:

  • Responsibilities
    • Proper preparation of the samples
    • Carrying out the analyses
    • Correct interpretation of the measurement or test results
    • Efficient cooperation with doctors and other clients of the analyses

  • Competencies
    • Expertise in handling laboratory and analytical equipment

For trained biomedical analysts HF, Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education (Achtung: English, Federal Diploma of Higher Education (HFPE)) as an expert in biomedical analysis and laboratory management with a Federal Diploma or as an expert in cytodiagnostics with a Federal Diploma are available, as well as additional training, for example as an instructor with a Federal Diploma. Training in leadership and management as well as postgraduate courses, such as a Master's degree (MAS) in Management in Healthcare, can also be interesting continuing education, further training for BMA CHE.
