There are two ways to study political communication:

  • A CAS at a Universities - Prerequisites: Degree from a recognized technical or higher education institution, 5 years of professional experience in a managerial role and admission interview
  • A Master's degree in Political Communication and Governance at a Universities - this requires a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies and Media Research (or formerly Journalism and Communication Studies)

Social media has fundamentally changed the way political and state institutions communicate. In the television age, political communication was characterized by mass media, politics and citizens, and the media played a central mediating role. Social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter enable direct communication without the detour via journalistic mass media. We therefore speak of a hybrid media system in which social media enable a direct exchange between citizens, politicians and the media in all conceivable constellations. This allows individual citizens, politicians and journalists to interact with each other. Social media have become an integral part of the communication repertoire of political parties and state institutions. However, political communication in the age of social media also poses immense challenges such as data protection and personal rights - aspects such as hate speech and polarization are closely linked to this.

The CAS in Political Communication is part of the MAS in Communication Management and Leadership for communication experts. The continuing education master's comprises a total of three CAS plus a diploma phase. For more detailed information, please contact the relevant Universities directly.

The CAS Political Communication certificate course is worth 15 ECTS credits and comprises 24 attendance dates spread over approximately four months. A transfer thesis is written parallel to the course.

In continuing education, further training in political communication you will learn:

  • analyze specific situations
  • strategically design and effectively implement communication measures
  • Considering the challenges of mediatized politics and direct democracy
  • Understanding politics, media and the public as well as the digital transformation

The most important principle of "crisis communication in politics" is: crisis communication requires preparation. This preparation includes

  • Distribute responsibilities and coordinate processes
  • Sensitize employees
  • Develop scenarios
  • Communication: reactive or proactive
  • Formulate language rules
  • Beware of staged attacks

Crisis comes from the Greek word for decision. This hits the nail on the head - because in a crisis situation, decisions usually have to be made at very short notice, which can sometimes have far-reaching consequences. This makes it all the more important to plan your own crisis communication well in advance.
