How long does further training to become an "Electrical Installation and Safety Expert (HFP)" take and how much does it cost?

Duration and procedure

  • The preparatory courses to become an electrical installation and safety expert are designed to be taken alongside work
  • They have a modular structure and usually last 2-4 semesters.
  • The courses comprise 560-608 lessons.
  • The lessons usually take place one or two evenings a week and/or on Saturday mornings.
  • The Higher Professional Examination takes place annually, provided that at least 10 candidates meet the admission requirements, otherwise every two years. The HFP can be taken in one of the three official languages German, French or Italian.

Costs

  • The fees for the preparation course amount to CHF 15,500-CHF 21,000.
  • The examination fee is set by the sponsoring body, the Swiss association EIT.swiss (formerly VSEI). It currently amounts to CHF 1,445 (as at April 2022).
  • Many providers charge additional costs for training documents, teaching materials, exam preparation or the use of laboratories and the rental of measuring equipment. We recommend that you enquire directly with the provider of your choice to find out what additional costs you can expect.
  • Since 2018, graduates of preparatory courses who have passed the federal professional examination (BP) and higher professional examination (HFP) have been able to apply for a refund of up to half of the course costs paid, regardless of the result.More information can be found here.
