IPv6 course: Data transmission according to the Internet Protocol Version 6 standard

IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) is a procedure standardized by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) for the transmission of data in packet-switched computer networks such as the Internet. Together with 500 other network protocols of the TCP/IP family, IPv6 forms the basis for communication on the Internet. Control information from various network protocols is interleaved in the packets according to a layer model. It is based on the network layer (layer 3) of the OSI layer model. As part of the network layer within the Internet protocol family, the iPv6 protocol establishes a 128-bit addressing of the network elements involved that is valid across subnetworks. It also regulates routing - the process of packet forwarding between subnets, which in turn are operated by various lower-layer protocols. Compared to the previous IPv4 version, this Internet standard version offers more possible IPv6 addresses for addressing network elements, the unique addressing of all end devices in a network as well as more stable and more extensive public addressing.

The IPv6 address is a network address that logically addresses a host uniquely within a network. An IPv6 host has several addresses with different scopes of validity. A connection-local IPv6 address is only valid in the local network and is not routed, whereas global addresses are valid beyond the local network on the Internet. The length of an IPv6 address is 128 bits, which allows an unimaginable number of addresses and could be used to cover every square millimeter of the earth.

IPv6 is responsible for switching data packets through a packet-switching network, addressing network nodes and stations and forwarding data packets between subnets. Due to these tasks, IPv6 is assigned to the third layer of the OSI layer model. Due to the core task of data packet switching (routing), Ipv6 is part of the TCP/IP protocol family.

The advantages of IPv6 lie in the number of IPv6 addresses and the improvement of other accessibility features. This is because with IPv6 the end-to-end principle has been consistently developed further. This means that an interface can have several IPv6 addresses or even special addresses for several interfaces. In addition to the scarcity of addresses, IPv6 vs IPv4 also makes configuration and operation easier. Setting up and operating a local network is made easier by the fact that the stateless IPv6 configuration and connection-local addresses are available immediately after the computer is started. According to the VPN definition, a virtual private network (VPN) is a network connection that cannot be viewed by uninvolved third parties. According to the VPN definition, a conventional VPN is a private, self-contained communication network used to connect a subscriber of the existing communication network to another network. The classic case is an employee who gains access to the company network from home in order to work from the home office. The connection is made using a network cable.
