NIV course: How to get your follow-up permit

Are you familiar with the Ordinance on Low-Voltage Electrical Installations, or NIV for short, and would you like to apply this knowledge professionally? Or are you particularly interested in the field of electrics and electricity, so that you could imagine gaining a professional foothold in this area? Would you also like to have more to do with the Low Voltage Installation Ordinance in your job and carry out electrical installations on a wide variety of buildings and systems? If you want to work with electricity and low voltage, you need to learn exactly what the NIV 15 regulates and specifies during your training.

During your training as an electrician, electrical fitter, electrical draughtsman or a related profession, you will learn in detail which measures are regulated by the NIV and to which areas they apply. What type of installations does the ordinance apply to? What exactly are electrical installations? What safety requirements must be taken into account? Who receives an installation permit in the first place? What training and further training must you have in order to carry out installation work as a competent person? Which installation work does not require a permit? These and many other questions are answered in detail in the NIV, which serves as a guide for your work.

Questions and answers

Participation in the examination for the Low Voltage Installation Ordinance 14 does not necessarily require training as a solar technician HFA, but can also be sought by persons with a Federal VET Diploma in a related profession (electronics, IT, multimedia electronics, network electronics, automotive mechatronics, vehicle electrical electronics, heating installation, refrigeration installation, ventilation system construction, sanitary installation or a Federal Professional Examination or Advanced Federal Professional Examination AFPE) with an electrical engineering component. However, examination candidates must also have at least three years of professional experience in solar technology under the supervision of an NIV 14 license holder and have demonstrably completed at least 42 lessons of electrical engineering training.

Refresher courses, also known as refresher courses, are continuing education, further training courses prescribed by the Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations for NIV license holders, which must include at least one day every two years. These courses are therefore also offered with a duration of one day (eight lessons).

After attending all the mandatory lessons, you will receive a course certificate which will enable you to take the examination of the Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations (ESTI). If you pass the exam, you will receive the "Connection permit in accordance with Art. 15 of the Ordinance on Low-Voltage Electrical Installations (NIV)", which authorizes you to connect and replace permanently connected electrical products, but not to work on the supply lines.

There are two different low voltage (cert.) courses:

  • NIV 8 Preparatory course practical examination Low Voltage Installation Ordinance (cert.)
    As a preparatory course for the practical examination of the Low Voltage Installation Ordinance in accordance with NIV Art. 8 for specialist knowledge in the installation sector.
  • Company electrician's license according to Art. 13
    For work on company-owned (electrical) installations in accordance with NIV Art. 13 (company electrician).
  • NIV 14 Permit for installation work in solar technology (cert.):
    For installation work on special systems in accordance with NIV Art. 14 (photovoltaic systems, battery systems, etc.).
  • NIV 15 Low-voltage connection permit (cert.):
    The basics of electrical engineering are taught. Calculations for direct, alternating and three-phase alternating voltage are also included. The content of the course is based on the examination regulations of the Swiss Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations (ESTI).
