The main difference between a sports grammar school and a normal grammar school is the reduced curriculum. This focuses on physical education and individual sports and therefore offers sport as a main subject. Everyday school life at a sports school can therefore hardly be compared with that at a conventional school. Sports training takes up a large part of the timetable and is the main component of lessons, although other subjects are not neglected and are always adapted to the cantonal curriculum. Sports high schools therefore offer a healthy balance between training and lessons. As the training and lessons are both coordinated and offered by the school, students can concentrate much better on their sporting career and still complete a higher school leaving certificate at the same time. Most sports high schools also run a boarding school, as graduates sometimes come to the school from far and wide. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, one of the most important special forms is the ski high school with a focus on winter sports. Many of today's top athletes attend or have attended a sports high school.
