At most language schools, you have the option of choosing between different language courses that you can attend during your language study trip to the USA. As a rule, these are standard courses and intensive courses, occasionally also semi-intensive courses, which differ mainly in the number of lessons per week. These courses can usually be booked for as little as one week and can be extended on a weekly basis. Business English courses are also freely selectable in terms of the number of weeks. However, the situation is different for preparation courses for language exams, which have a fixed duration. Cambridge preparation courses, for example, are usually designed for 10 to 12 weeks. Some schools also offer intensive courses that allow you to take the FCE, CAE or CPE exam after just 3 to 4 weeks. However, this requires a high level of commitment and the willingness to put up with long days and little free time. A TOEFL preparation course (Test of English as a Foreign Language) usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. The duration of other English courses can vary greatly and is determined individually by each language school in the USA.

The question should really be, for whom is such continuing education, further training not suitable? Because whether you're a student or a senior citizen, it's almost always the right time for a language trip. There is a whole range of offers especially for schoolchildren that specialize in stays of several weeks during the vacation period. It doesn't matter whether you want to go to America for two weeks in the spring break or spend five weeks there in the summer vacation, the offers are usually identical.
Adults and senior citizens are usually less restricted in terms of when they can travel, so there is also a large selection of first-class offers for these groups. However, always pay attention to the target group information for the individual courses. Just like your age, your previous foreign language skills are irrelevant. Both complete beginners and very advanced learners can apply for a language study trip to the USA. You will be placed in language groups according to your level of proficiency and will attend a language course with them during your stay. This allows you to learn quickly, as all participants in a course have the same level of knowledge and are therefore on an equal footing so that no one is over- or underchallenged.
Although the Cambridge certificates, such as the FCE (First), the CAE (Advanced) and the CPE (Proficiency) are British language examinations, they are still offered by some language schools that you can attend during a language study trip to the USA. However, it is usually the American language exams that you can take in the USA, such as the TOEFL test, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, which is a requirement for admission to many American and Canadian colleges and universities. This language test is also suitable for the professional world, although there is also the internationally recognized TOEIC, the Test of English in International Communication, which tests your English language skills to communicate in an international environment.

Before embarking on an English language study trip, it is always important that you inform yourself thoroughly about what the individual schools have to offer. Only if you have sufficient comparative material at your disposal will you be able to find the continuing education, further training and language course that will really support you and in whose environment you feel comfortable.

Once you have received some documents, the first thing to do is to check whether the individual English language schools offer the courses you are interested in. If you are looking for business courses, a language school with a focus on youth travel is unlikely to appeal to you. The basic requirements should therefore be met, including a suitable course, a good location, a small class size and suitable accommodation with good transport connections.
