As nice as the thought of studying at a language school in Australia may be, it needs to be well planned. First, think about what you expect from your language study trip. Are you aiming for a language diploma or do you really want to improve your business English? Do you want to learn as much as possible and is an intensive language course the only option for you? Is a language course in the background for you, but surfing on one of the many beaches on the Gold Coast at the forefront of your wishes? Would you like to get to know the country and its people and travel as much as possible? Are you drawn to a vibrant metropolis like Sydney or rather to an extremely relaxed town like Byron Bay? In addition to your destination and the type of course you would like to take, you should also consider the time available and your budget.
Language schools in Australia often require students to be at least 16 years old, so that less supervision is required and students have a certain level of maturity. Nevertheless, the language students are usually quite a bit older and so the average age at a language school in Australia tends to be 26, depending on the region, which is not least due to the fact that business English is also often studied in Australia. A higher minimum age is often required for participants in business English courses, partly because a language level of at least B1 is usually required and the topics of the course are primarily aimed at professionals.
In addition to the information on the duration of the individual lessons, the number of weekly lessons and the class size, it is also important to find out where you will be staying during your language study trip in Australia. With a host family, in a hotel, backpackers or on the school campus? What food will you get there and how far is it from your home to your school and to the attractions of the city or the beach? Are there sufficient transport connections?
What infrastructure does the language school in Australia have? It is important to know how the classrooms are furnished and, above all, whether they have air conditioning. Are they up to date and what additional facilities, such as a library or language lab, are available? A free internet connection could also be of interest to you, as well as access to computers and other technical facilities.
For your language study trip, also find out which teaching methods are used and what training and continuing education, further training is provided for the teaching staff. Does the school have recognized certificates and are the costs of materials for lessons and self-study included in the price? Make sure you clarify these and other important points before you register with a language school for your language study trip to Australia.
The range of language courses on offer varies greatly depending on the language school in Australia. As a rule, there are standard courses and intensive courses, which differ mainly in the number of weekly lessons. Please note, however, that the individual courses can have very different durations and numbers of lessons depending on the language school. For example, standard courses at one school have 15 lessons of 45 minutes each and at another 20 lessons of 60 minutes each. These have a fixed duration, usually over 10 to 12 weeks, and are therefore less suitable for people who want to learn a little English and then travel. In addition, many Australian language schools also offer combination courses consisting of group lessons and individual lessons, for example. One-to-one lessons are also possible from time to time, but are not the rule in Australia. Increasingly, courses are also being offered that combine an English course with a leisure activity, such as English and surfing or English and diving, so that you can attend a standard English course in the morning and pursue the leisure activity in the afternoon, as well as courses at the teacher's home.

Business courses in business English or a specific focus are not offered by all language schools in Australia, so if you are interested, please contact the language travel providers directly. Courses for managers, foreign language teachers or other specialized courses can also be found on this continent, but not in many language schools.

In addition to conventional language courses, most language schools in Australia also offer exam preparation courses that prepare you for the Cambridge diplomas, such as FCE, CAE or CPE. These courses usually have a fixed duration of ten to twelve weeks, depending on the exam, school and intensity. If you don't have that much time, some language schools also offer intensive preparation courses that train you for language exams in half the time. For such a language stay at a language school in Australia, you should note that there are fixed dates for the language examinations, in December and June, as well as in March for the FCE and CAE. You can take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) every month.

Before embarking on an English language study trip, it is always important that you inform yourself thoroughly about what the individual schools have to offer. Only if you have sufficient comparative material at your disposal will you be able to find the continuing education, further training and language course that will really support you and in whose environment you feel comfortable.

Once you have received some documents, the first thing to do is to check whether the individual English language schools offer the courses you are interested in. If you are looking for business courses, a language school with a focus on youth travel is unlikely to appeal to you. The basic requirements should therefore be met, including a suitable course, a good location, a small class size and suitable accommodation with good transport connections.
