Technician HF Systems Engineering: Specialists at the interface between mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and IT

HF system technology technicians develop and produce new industrial systems or connect components of existing systems. They have in-depth knowledge of regulation, control and automation technology. Systems engineering technicians ensure the functionality and further development of operational systems. This may involve mechanical engineering, plant engineering, measuring instrument engineering, diagnostic instrument engineering, precision instrument engineering, robotics, microtechnology or nanotechnology. Persons with 3 years of basic vocational training in a technical profession as a laboratory technician, chemical and pharmaceutical technologist specializing in pharmaceutical and chemical technology are admitted to the HF systems technology technician course. Alternatively, an EFZ qualification in another profession or a high school diploma with at least 1 year of professional experience is also possible.

Technician HF Systems Engineering:

HF systems engineering technicians have a holistic understanding of complex technical systems thanks to their broad range of skills. They have specialist knowledge in automation, control engineering, digital technology, software engineering and electronics. With their specialist knowledge, systems engineering technicians can plan, build and maintain industrial systems. The course offers four specializations for the HF systems engineering technician:

  • Automation
  • Mechatronics
  • Medical technology
  • Pharmaceutical and chemical technology

The systems engineering course lasts 2 years full-time or at least 3 years part-time. The following course content is taught in the Technician HF Systems Engineering degree program:

  • General education, business administration and course-specific basic training

  • Programming

HF system technology technicians are responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of technical systems. They take care of quality assurance, occupational safety, environmental issues, optimal processes, data security, functional tests, commissioning and troubleshooting. When developing new systems, you take into account customer requirements, operational processes and environmental factors. For more complex systems, they network electronic and mechanical components and program suitable software. System technicians are also responsible for meeting deadlines and cost targets.

A CHE systems technology technician - today a CHE systems technician - performs the following activities:

  • Developing technical solutions based on customer needs and technical requirements
  • search for and rectify the causes of faults in systems
  • assemble system components and make electrical connections
  • put systems into operation
  • carry out maintenance and servicing work
  • manage and take responsibility for projects
  • ensure the quality of the work and timely completion
  • calculate project costs
  • create technical documents and work instructions

The following options are available for the Systems Engineering degree program:

  • College of Higher Education to become a qualified systems engineer CHE
  • University of Applied Sciences Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering
  • Subject-specific CAS, DAS or MAS at Colleges of Higher Education and Universities of Applied Sciences

Anyone with a relevant Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (VET Diploma) will be admitted to the Systems Engineering CHE course. Persons with another Federal VET Diploma, a vocational, technical or Baccalaureate certificate, a technical secondary school certificate or an equivalent qualification can also be admitted on the basis of a dossier.

The duration of training may be extended for persons without a relevant Federal VET Diploma.

During the training, the trainee should be employed at least 50% in the training area.

As a systems technician CHE, you will have the following personal skills:

Systems engineering technicians work in research and development laboratories, in production and workshops or in the office, depending on the task. They work in interdisciplinary teams with automation technicians, electronics technicians, IT technicians, polymechanics and process and production managers. You will maintain contact with customers and suppliers.
