What will I learn in the preparatory courses for the Federal Professional Examination? What can I do as a certified insurance specialist (FPE)?

In the preparatory courses for the Federal Professional Examination to become an insurance specialist, you will learn the fundamentals of the insurance industry, insurance marketing, insurance law, and personal management. You will also have the opportunity to specialize and gain in-depth knowledge in an elective area. The preparatory courses will also provide you with targeted preparation for the written and oral portions of the exam.

The curriculum for the preparatory courses is based on the guidelines set by the responsible body for the Federal Professional Examination, the Swiss Insurance Industry Vocational Training Association (VBV). The VBV distinguishes between so-called “mandatory modules,” “elective modules,” and “process modules.”

The four required modules form the foundation of the program:

  • Personal management
  • Insurance industry
  • Insurance law
  • Insurance marketing

The eleven elective modules offer students the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge in three different industries. The options are:

  • AHV/IV and other social insurances
  • Banking & Finance
  • Property Insurance
  • Property Insurance
  • Individual Life Insurance
  • Technical insurance
  • Transportation Insurance
  • Group Life Insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Accident insurance
  • Insurance Medicine.

Finally, you can specialize in one of the four available process modules:

  • Brokerage
  • Underwriting incl. product management
  • Claims and Benefits Processing/Service Management
  • Sales and Support

The chosen specialization will be tested on the Federal Professional Examination.

Insurance specialists with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education possess a high level of professional expertise, enabling them to take on challenging technical and advisory tasks as well as management responsibilities.

Their duties vary depending on their chosen specialization:

  • You design, develop, and implement insurance products (underwriting and product management)
  • You review and process claims (claims and benefits processing)
  • They arrange insurance policies for customers (brokering) or
  • They acquire and advise new clients by putting together tailored insurance plans (sales and support).
