Mental training courses cost different amounts depending on the structure, content and duration of the course. A course lasting around six months (150 lessons) can be expected to cost around CHF 4,500. Shorter courses or introductory seminars can be cheaper. The content of a training course to become a mental coach varies greatly depending on the training institute and the course offered. The following is a list of possible topics that can be taught:

• Foundation and introduction to mental work (definition and objectives, history and scientific basis, areas of application (sport, health, work, school, etc.))
• Techniques and tools (visualization, suggestions, inner images, dealing with failure, building resilience)
• Stress management and relaxation (stress models and analysis, relaxation techniques such as autogenic training, mindfulness)
• Self-management (building self-confidence, dealing with fears, blockages and pressure to perform, emotional control)
• Coaching skills and conversation management / communication (conversation structure, questioning techniques, active listening, solution-oriented language)

A mental coach helps people to break out of their mental rut and gain mental strength and achieve their personal goals. To this end, mental training uses various methods such as relaxation techniques, stress management and imagination exercises. Successful mental training achieves a long-term change in cognitive abilities and the development of mental strength. It is not about a short-term change in behavior or getting rid of fears.

Nowadays, online training is in tune with the times and more and more providers are offering this variant or combined variants with other forms of teaching. The advantages here are, of course, learning from home (sometimes independent of time). In many cases, basic knowledge is also taught online through videos, practical exercises and theoretical input and then supplemented with face-to-face lessons on site.

In sports mental training, core skills are specifically taken into account and an individual development plan is drawn up. Self-confidence and trust in one's own abilities are promoted in a targeted manner. Athletes are also specifically prepared for competitions and also deal with body language and the intervention matrix.

The two terms often mean the same thing. However, coaches always take on an observing, analyzing and advisory role and adapt their methods individually in the course of mental coaching. It also follows from this that mental coaches generally deal with coaching individuals, whereas mental trainers tend to work with groups and practice specific actions through systematic repetition.
