Foreign trade managers are responsible for the entire process of exporting and importing capital and consumer goods as well as services. They work at the management level of internationally oriented companies in industry, trade, banking, logistics and transport insurance.

The foreign trade manager (or export manager) is well versed in business management, explores the opportunities and risks involved in opening up and developing foreign markets, calculates the risks involved in foreign trade and defines hedging strategies. Other areas of responsibility include monitoring delivery conditions, financing, payment security and exchange rate hedging. Consultation with management is also part of the job. The export manager speaks several languages and uses these with customers, suppliers and authorities abroad. His negotiating tactics and broad general knowledge, as well as his contemporary presentation style are trademarks.

The foreign trade manager consults with lawyers and other specialists on the means of distribution and supply contracts in competition, product liability and intellectual property law. He plans and analyzes distribution logistics with specialists from forwarding, transport and logistics companies and transport insurers. Other important tasks include dealing with issues relating to international customs origin and VAT problems as well as carrying out projects for appearances at foreign trade fairs or for production relocations. The export manager also develops concepts for the professional training and further education of employees in the company. Continuous, targeted further training at schools and within the company secures his position in order to be among the specialists in export management.

Questions and answers

The Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in Export Management no longer exists under this name. It has been renamed the AFPE in Foreign Trade Management, but the content remains largely the same and is suitable for the same positions as the Export Management course.
Each school can independently determine the course times and duration for continuing education, further training to become a certified export manager AFPE, so you will generally find different course dates at each of these educational institutions. At some schools this means evening classes only, at others one evening per week and Saturday classes, others offer block courses or a Friday and Saturday course every four weeks. It therefore makes sense to request the necessary documents from all schools that are eligible for this continuing education, further training to become a certified export manager. Knowledge of foreign languages is not required for the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) to become a certified export manager / foreign trade manager, but it is essential for your work as such. As you will be working in foreign trade in internationally active companies, a very good knowledge of English and French is essential. Some schools offer you the opportunity to attend language courses to improve your language skills, sometimes free of charge, sometimes for a small fee. If you feel that this is necessary, make sure that you can benefit from these additional services when choosing the right school.
The Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) to become a certified export manager lasts a total of 465 minutes and is divided into 5 examination parts, which are either written or oral. Before you are admitted to the examination, you must prepare a diploma thesis, in which you will also be examined orally, lasting half an hour. The individual parts of the examination can be subdivided, but consist of a 180-minute written examination on import and export, a 45-minute written examination on company management, a 45-minute specialist discussion on import and export and a 45-minute specialist discussion on company management. You will also find detailed information on the examination in the examination guide, which you can obtain from the relevant schools for export managers if required.
In order to be admitted to the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in Export Management or the new title of Foreign Trade Manager, you must either have a qualification as a foreign trade specialist with a federal certificate and at least two years of professional experience following further training in foreign trade. You must either have a Federal VET Diploma, a diploma from a commercial college, a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized qualification plus six years of professional experience in foreign trade, or a degree from a Universities or College of Higher Education, an Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) in the commercial sector or an equivalent qualification and three years of experience in foreign trade. You must also submit a diploma thesis, the exact structure and content of which will be provided by the relevant schools for your continuing education, further training.
