Sign language interpreting - a degree course for everyone with a heart for deaf and hearing-impaired people

Do you love languages of different origins and do you enjoy finding precise and accurate formulations? Do you enjoy communicating and are you passionate about the cultural community of deaf and hearing-impaired people? Do you already have some previous knowledge of Swiss German Sign Language (DSGS) and would you like to refine and deepen it?

Then the Bachelor's degree course in sign language interpreting is certainly a very interesting option! During your studies, you will focus specifically on Swiss German Sign Language - DSGS for short - and learn how to interpret professionally between hearing and deaf or hearing-impaired people. You will learn how to apply the international code of conduct for interpreters in your work and will be aware of the linguistic and cognitive processes involved in interpreting.

Interpreting services are sought and needed wherever deaf and hearing people meet. After successfully completing your Bachelor's degree, you will interpret from sign language into Swiss German or High German or vice versa.

Training in sign language interpreting is a course of study at the Intercantonal Universities of Applied Sciences for Special Needs Education HfH in Zurich, which concludes with a federally recognized diploma as "Bachelor of Arts HfH in Sign Language Interpreting".

Sign language interpreting, so that people without proven prior knowledge of sign language can also register for the course. Only at the beginning of the course is proof of at least 84 lessons of a DSGS preliminary course required, which can be completed at the Signschool, the sign language school. Students can start the Bachelor's degree course in Sign Language Interpreting every three years, in September. The next possible start date is September 2018, then 2021, 2024 and so on.

Students on the Bachelor's degree course in Sign Language Interpreting learn to translate from High German or a Swiss German dialect into Swiss German Sign Language DSGS and, of course, vice versa.

Training in sign language interpreting is a course of study at the Intercantonal Universities of Applied Sciences for Special Needs Education HfH in Zurich, which concludes with a federally recognized diploma as "Bachelor of Arts HfH in Sign Language Interpreting".

At interpreting schools and other educational institutions, you can complete various courses and continuing education, further training in interpreting and translating. For example, you can obtain a federal certificate in intercultural translation, as well as a bachelor's degree in multilingual communication or applied linguistics with various specializations, or a master's degree. You can also obtain a cantonally recognized diploma at an interpreting school, namely as a translator (Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education (Achtung: Engler / Übersetzerin CHE)). The same applies to a federal diploma.
