Training as a dangerous goods officer should comprise at least 24 teaching units of 45 minutes each. As a rule, the training is completed within 3-5 days. Ask the training providers about the exact duration of the course.

Dangerous goods are goods and substances that pose particular risks during transportation. As a dangerous goods officer, you are responsible for the safe handling and transportation of such substances. Typical characteristics of dangerous goods are, for example

• Explosive
• (Self-)inflammable
• Toxic
• Contagious
• Radioactive
• Corrosive
• and other hazardous properties

Handling dangerous goods requires professional competence, care and knowledge of the legal regulations.

You are allowed to work as a dangerous goods officer if you have a valid training certificate, i.e. a dangerous goods officer training course, for the relevant mode of transport. This certificate is issued by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce after the basic course has been completed and the examination passed. The certificate is valid for five years and can then be extended by means of further training or a new examination.

No special prior knowledge or professional qualifications are required to be admitted to training.

The examination as a dangerous goods officer is carried out by a recognized examination body.

It is therefore quite possible that you will not take the exam at the training center.

Foreign training is not automatically recognized in Switzerland. Anyone wishing to work as a dangerous goods safety advisor must fulfill the Swiss requirements according to ADR/GGVE.

In certain cases, foreign training can be credited or recognized if it corresponds to Swiss regulations in terms of content and level. In most cases, however, a supplementary examination or a course in Switzerland is required in order to be able to work officially as a dangerous goods safety advisor.

All companies that transport dangerous goods are legally obliged to appoint an internal or external dangerous goods officer.

The amount of work involved depends heavily on the size and activity of the company:

• In small companies, the job may only require a few days per year.
• In larger companies or logistics companies, it can be a full-time position.
