Due to the growing importance of information technology and digitalization in all areas of the economy, there has long been a shortage of IT specialists. The Swiss Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI, together with the Swiss ICT Vocational Training Association, has responded to this shortage of skilled workers by creating several professional examinations in the field of IT since 2012: ICT Platform Development Specialist (formerly ICT System and Network Technology), ICT Application Development, Business Informatics, Mediamatics and Cyber Security.
The course content and examination topics of the training in platform development, i.e. ICT platform development specialist with a federal certificate (formerly ICT system technician and network technician), are practice-oriented and are regularly revised by ICT professionals from the industry and adapted to the latest technological possibilities and ICT requirements.
Higher vocational education and training qualifications are highly recognized on the Swiss labour market, as can be seen from the fact that many employers contribute to the costs of further training in preparation for the professional examination (on average around 35% in Switzerland, as of 2018, source: Federal Statistical Office, 21.12.2020).
There is a wide range of jobs on offer for holders of a Federal PET Diploma in Computer Science; employers regularly look specifically for people with a PET degree in computer science and often classify them in the same way as university graduates (FH and Uni).
