A recognized professional qualification can be obtained in Switzerland in various ways. These include a regular apprenticeship, a shortened apprenticeship for those who already have a qualification and two options for adults with at least five years of professional experience. These include direct admission to the final examination and validation of educational achievements. Which path is right for you depends on your education, professional experience and personal situation.
A recognized vocational qualification is an important basis for your professional future. It improves your chances on the job market, increases your professional security and opens up new opportunities for further training. In Switzerland, there are several ways to obtain a Federal Certificate of Vocational Education and Training (VET) or a Federal VET Diploma (VET). Which option is suitable depends on your personal situation, previous training and professional experience.
A regular apprenticeship is the traditional route to a vocational qualification. It is primarily aimed at young people, but is also open to adults.
Training takes place in a training company and at a vocational college. A valid apprenticeship contract is required. Depending on the profession, the apprenticeship lasts two years (Federal VET Diploma) or three to four years (Federal VET Diploma). A final examination is taken at the end of the apprenticeship.
This route is particularly suitable for people who have not yet completed formal vocational training.
People who already have a qualification such as a Federal VET Certificate, a Federal VET Diploma, a Baccalaureate or an equivalent qualification can complete a shortened apprenticeship under certain conditions.
An apprenticeship contract is also required here. It is possible to be exempted from individual courses or to shorten the duration of the apprenticeship due to existing educational achievements. As a rule, the apprenticeship period is reduced by around one year. The apprenticeship also concludes with a final examination.
Good to know: In some professions, age and professional experience are taken into account. This can have a positive effect on the apprentice's salary, as this is negotiable. Adult apprentices should actively contribute their previous experience and skills.
If you already have at least five years of professional experience, two to three years of which must be in your chosen profession, you can choose between two further options.
Direct admission to the final examination is also referred to as adult education. In principle, it is possible for all vocational education and training courses at Federal VET Diploma and Federal VET Certificate level.
An apprenticeship contract is not required. At least five years of professional experience are required. Preparation for the final examination is individual. After passing the exam, the corresponding qualification is awarded.
The validation of educational achievements recognizes skills and competences that have already been acquired. This means that a Federal VET Diploma or Federal VET Certificate can be obtained without having to complete a full vocational education and training (VET) program.
This option is only available in certain professions and is not offered in all cantons. Here, too, at least five years of professional experience are required; an apprenticeship contract is not necessary. The procedure includes the preparation of a dossier, its assessment, an interview and, if necessary, additional training.
There are various routes to a recognized vocational qualification. Whether a regular apprenticeship, shortened training or a qualification for adults with work experience: there is a suitable solution for many life situations. Individual advice can help you find the right path and make the most of your own opportunities.
