Tipps und Entscheidungshilfen für die Ausbildungswahl

Geomatics deals with precise information about space, its characteristics and use. The information is used for the efficient and reliable use of spaces, as this is the only way to assess the consequences for further use. Professionals record and process the essential spatial information or a defined area and present it, for example with graphics or statistics, so that it can be used appropriately. In geomatics, accurate and qualitative work is a prerequisite so that decisions on the use of space can be made and successfully implemented.

Complete a Bachelor's degree in this subject and train to become an expert engineer. You will deal with spatial surveying and the processing of geoinformation at a high level. You will know and master mathematical and scientific basics and combine various technologies for the acquisition and evaluation of geoinformation. You work at the interface between geoinformatics and geodesy, but are also familiar with cartography and geography.

The prerequisite for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Geomatics course at a Swiss university of applied sciences (UAS) is a completed apprenticeship as a geomatics technician and a vocational baccalaureate. You can find offers, further information and universities of applied sciences for this challenging Bachelor's course at Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch.

Questions and answers

The standard period of study for a Bachelor's degree in Geomatics is three years of full-time study.

In addition to a Bachelor's degree in Geomatics, there is also the option here in Switzerland to train as a geomatics technician in an apprenticeship with a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (VET Diploma). This four-year apprenticeship can be completed with a focus on official surveying, cartography or geoinformatics.

The lectures and courses of the Bachelor's degree program in Geomatics do not take place exclusively after work, so it is possible to continue working full-time or on a slightly reduced schedule. The course is designed as a full-time course, but can also be taken part-time in the first four semesters with a reduced module workload per semester, although this extends the study time accordingly. However, the days and times of day that are free due to part-time study vary from student to student and should be clarified with the Director of Studies. However, the final year of study cannot be completed part-time, as the block courses are compulsory for all prospective geomatics students.

The apprenticeship to become a Federal VET Diploma geomatics technician takes place in the form of block courses at a vocational school for the construction industry and, depending on the chosen specialization, in various training companies. For example, practical training with a focus on cartography can be completed at the Federal Statistical Office in Neuchâtel or at the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo in Wabern. With a focus on geoinformatics or cadastral surveying, geomatics trainees have somewhat more extensive options for practical training, namely in surveying offices, electricity, gas and water works and engineering offices.

In the first semester of the Geomatics Bachelor's degree course, students take the five compulsory modules on the following subjects: Measurement Technology; Geoinformatics, Introduction to Geoinformation Systems, GIS Practical; Physics for Geomatics Technicians, Statistics I, Geometry, Mathematics I, Communication and the Environment and Technical English I. Either Computer Science for Geomatics Technicians or Geomatics Basics for Non-Geomatics Technicians can be chosen as a compulsory elective module. In the second semester (there are only five compulsory modules on the program: Geodetic Measurement Technology I (GMT Basics I and GMT Practical); Data Modelling and DBMS & Programming I; Natural Sciences II (Physics for Geomatics Technicians II; Statistics II; Geodetic Statistics); Mathematics II; and Language and Society II. The third semester comprises the areas of geodetic measurement technology III, geodetic statistics and adjustment calculation I, vector and image data, programming II, engineering mathematics, language and society III (law I, soft skills I, English, GIS & environment). In the fourth semester, Geodetic Measurement Technology II, Geodetic Statistics and Adjustment Calculation II are joined by Photogrammetry I, GI Modelling and Analysis, Geovisualization and Business and Law. The fifth semester comprises Photogrammetry II and Remote Sensing, Official Surveying I, a Geomatics Seminar I and Block Project I and II. Engineering geodesy, geoinformatics or GUP are available as elective profiles, with two modules to be selected. Finally, in the sixth semester, the modules Modern Geosensorics, Geomatics Seminar II and a Block Project III are offered, as well as two of three elective profiles. The Bachelor's thesis is also completed in the sixth semester.

The Geomatics Bachelor's degree program consists of compulsory modules as well as compulsory elective modules and elective profiles. In the fifth and sixth semesters, you can choose two elective profiles to focus on. You can currently choose between: Geodesy / Engineering Geodesy; Geoinformatics and GIS-Environmental Planning (GUP). In the sixth and final semester, you will write a Bachelor's thesis worth 12 ECTS, for which you will have eight weeks.
