Tips and decision-making aids for choosing an apprenticeship

Money laundering has been enshrined in the Swiss Criminal Code since 1990 and has therefore been actively combated in Switzerland since the early 1990s. Art. 305bis criminalizes money laundering, while Art. 305ter regulates the reporting rights of members of the financial sector and sanctions insufficient due diligence in financial transactions.

The Federal Act on Combating Money Laundering in the Financial Sector (AMLA) was enacted on October 10, 1997 and is the responsibility of banks, investment companies (e.g. investment companies), venture capital funds and insurance companies (financial intermediaries) on the one hand and the para-banking sector such as independent trustees, money changers and transmitters and asset managers on the other.

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA is responsible for the supervision of financial intermediaries with regard to compliance with the AMLA.

Financial intermediaries and the para-banking sector are under enormous pressure in Switzerland and abroad in terms of legal and image risks. They are therefore dependent on experienced employees and specialists in the area of AMLA who are familiar with the current regulations. Appropriate training courses are essential for compliance officers at banks, insurance companies, employees of the central register or auditing organizations.

The education portal Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch is recommended for a suitable overview of possible and recommendable education courses in the area of AMLA. It gives you a good overview of the current training courses available and puts you in direct contact with the individual training providers. You also benefit from additional services on the portal which will be of great benefit to you when choosing and planning your further education.

Questions and answers

In order to participate in the GWG continuing education, further training of the Institute for Financial Planning, you should have at least three years of professional experience in the financial sector. Please contact the provider directly for further requirements.

After completing all three modules, graduates of the GWG further training course are awarded the IfFP Institute for Financial Planning and Fund Academy "Financial Services Compliance FA/IfFP" certificate, which is recognized by the Swiss insurance industry's continuing education, further training register, Cicero.

Employees of banks, asset management companies and fund & asset management at all levels who work in client and product-oriented functions as well as LECO departments are the target group of the "Compliance: GWG, products and distribution, taxes" course.

In addition to those responsible for the Anti-Money Laundering Act, this also addresses those responsible for tax issues, sales and product managers in Fund & Asset Management, client advisors, employees in Distribution and Sales Support as well as Legal & Compliance.

The target groups and admission requirements are determined independently by the schools. There may therefore be slight differences from school to school.
We therefore recommend contacting the school of your choice directly via our contact form or using the "Ask a question" button to get in touch with the right contact person - quickly, easily and without obligation.

With renowned providers, continuing education, further training in combating money laundering consists of three modules, which you can also attend individually. The modules of a GWG training course are:

  • GWG compliance
You will learn the legal principles of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, in particular due diligence obligations, risk management, reporting law and terrorist financing.
  • Product and sales compliance
The focus is on regulatory responsibility in the sale of financial products (e.g. FinSA) and the correct approach to target groups.
  • Tax compliance
This covers topics such as Swiss tax law (incl. CRS, AEOI, FATCA), cross-border tax relationships, tax offenses and tax compliance.

As each provider can determine the learning content of a GWG training course themselves, you should enquire about this directly with the provider. It's very easy to do this directly using our contact form.

The scope of a course on the GWG (Money Laundering Act) can vary depending on the school and the course offered. As a rule, complete courses last between 14 and 21 half-days. Many training providers make it possible to complete individual modules separately, which allows for flexible and needs-based planning.

Whether a compact introduction or a comprehensive certificate course - the duration depends heavily on the respective training provider and the desired qualification.

As each school defines the time frame individually, it is advisable to enquire directly with the desired institution.
