What does the day-to-day work of foremen look like?

Foremen and foremen work in the structural and operational maintenance of a municipality's public infrastructure. They are responsible for the maintenance of roads, signalization, fountains, sewage systems, green areas, collection points, the depot area, etc.

Foremen and foremen in plant services have in-depth specialist knowledge, lead groups and train apprentices. They take on administrative tasks and are sometimes also operationally active, i.e. involved in maintenance and repairs themselves.

Requirements for admission to the foreman/worksman continuing education, further training (certified)

You need:

  • Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (VET Diploma) as an operational maintenance specialist and 3 years of professional experience in plant services

or

  • Federal VET Diploma in another trade or technical profession and 4 years of professional experience as a plant service employee

or

  • (without Federal VET Diploma) at least 6 years' experience as a plant service employee

Learning content

The continuing education, further training for foremen is modular in design and consists of5 modules plus vocational trainer course:

  • Module 1: Road maintenance and wastewater technology
  • Module 2: Nature conservation and the water cycle
  • Module 3: Public facilities, collection points, machinery/equipment, environment
  • Module 4: Administration and operational management
  • Module 5: Personnel management

Who theVocational trainer coursehas already successfully completed this part of the course does not need to take it again.

TheTraining costsamount to CHF 8200.

Course duration, number of teaching units and learning effort

The course is part-time and laststwo semesters. It comprises 400 lessons, which areone and a half days per weekbe issued.

The subject matter is taught in the form of classroom instruction, practical lessons, excursions and a weekend seminar.

In addition to class time, you need to plan time for preparing, following up and learning the subject matter. How much time thisSelf-studyis individual and depends on your prior knowledge, learning type, etc. To be on the safe side, allow half a day per week.

Each of thefive modulescloses with aModule examinationfrom.

Those who have completed all modules and theVocational trainer coursesuccessfully passed, receives the school's ownCertificate "Foreman/works service (school abbreviation)".

Anyone who has attended at least 80% of the continuing education, further training will receive aConfirmation of participation(i.e. even without having passed the module examinations).
