Medical secretary training - what are the main disadvantages?
After training as a medical secretary, you will be able to take on administrative tasks in the healthcare sector. You will take care of organization and correspondence as well as billing, insurance and human resources.
The main disadvantages of medical secretary training are:
- The qualification is not a federal certificate and is not recognized by the federal government. Medical secretary training is completed with the school's own certificate, a diploma from the Swiss Hospital Association (H+ supplement) or, in some cases, a diploma from the Swiss Commercial Association. The training can also be a good opportunity to re-enter professional life.
- At the certificate level, the schools can determine the learning content and admission requirements autonomously, as these are not regulated - unless they are regulated by an association. If the examinations are supervised by an association, these certificate examinations and title offers are regulated - this is the case with Bildung H+ or the Swiss Dental Association SSO.
- The training costs of around CHF 3,500 to CHF 6,500 are not subsidized by the federal government, as this is not a federal diploma. Check with your employer whether they will cover part of the costs.
- Even after training as a medical secretary, the main focus of work is in the commercial area, as there is no comprehensive basic medical training. In some cases, medical secretaries can also carry out simpler practical tasks such as taking blood samples or applying pressure dressings. Additional training is required for laboratory or X-ray work. Specialization as a practice manager or head medical secretary are further interesting development opportunities.
Medical secretaries work in the secretariat. Their areas of work vary depending on their training. For example, they work in private medical or dental practices, hospitals, care homes, public administrations, insurance companies or in the pharmaceutical industry.
