Planning and design as well as traffic modeling and analysis:

• Traffic engineers plan and design traffic systems, roads, intersections, traffic circles and other traffic-related projects.
• They use software and mathematical models to analyze traffic patterns in order to forecast future traffic requirements.

Road safety assessment, field studies, reporting and documentation:

• They evaluate roads, intersections and other traffic areas to improve their safety and reduce accidents.
• Sometimes traffic engineers have to go on site to carry out traffic counts, speed measurements or other investigations.
• Writing reports and giving presentations are also common requirements.

Public participation and communication: Traffic engineers could also meet with the public and other stakeholders to get feedback on projects and provide information.

Collaboration with other experts and project management: You often work in multidisciplinary teams, e.g. with urban planners, landscape architects and environmental experts.

This includes monitoring budgets, timelines and resources for transportation projects.

• Completion of a federally recognized vocational baccalaureate or a baccalaureate in the same or a related subject area or a baccalaureate from a grammar school
• Completed FH degree in traffic engineering

Communication, time management and problem solving skills, i.e. the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and comprehensibly both orally and in writing. The ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects or tasks and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate with other professionals such as urban planners, environmental scientists and civil engineers. It also requires the ability to identify transportation problems and develop creative and effective solutions to them.
