Wirtschaftsgymnasium: What are the main disadvantages?

In addition to a broad general education, the Wirtschaftsgymnasium provides a specialization in business and law. You will also be prepared for university studies.

Wirtschaftsgymnasium - these are the most important disadvantages:

  1. Admission to the Baccalaureate is regulated at cantonal level. Alternative educational pathways via the Federal Vocational Baccalaureate or a passerelle may also be worth considering. In some cantons there are entrance examinations for the Wirtschaftsgymnasium. In other cantons, a recommendation from the class teacher is sufficient. Private schools offer additional options, but are associated with costs.
  2. Not all schools offer an internal Matura at the end of the Wirtschaftsgymnasium, i.e. an examination that is taken by the school's own teaching staff on site and counts experience marks. In the case of the external Matura, the Matura examination must be taken externally at the Swiss Matura Commission. There are no preliminary grades and no subjects that can be completed during the course. However, people who have prepared themselves independently and without attending a baccalaureate school are also admitted.
  3. The range of subjects taught at the Wirtschaftsgymnasium is broad and includes languages (German and two foreign languages), mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, history, geography, visual arts and/or music. In addition, there are the special subjects. This can lead to excessive demands, as you have to at least be able to keep up in all subjects. Many students have problems with accounting in particular and need stamina.
  4. The learning pressure during the Wirtschaftsgymnasium and the examination pressure during the final examinations are high. You have to work to the letter in all subjects.

 

Successful completion of the Wirtschaftsmittelschule enables examination-free access to all universities (University, FIT) and Universities of Teacher Education (UTE) in Switzerland and to many foreign universities.
