The term coaching originally referred to in-house management coaching, in which experienced managers provide support and advice to junior staff. The term has since been extended to several areas of life and is used for employee and management coaching, team, group and project coaching as well as for personal coaching in professional and non-professional life issues.
The basic skills of a coach remain the same in all areas of work. For example, they need their own specialist knowledge and professional and life experience in the field, an open and appreciative view of people, the ability to listen and ask questions in the right way, etc. If you would like to know what else is required of a coach and whether this could really be your vocation, you can find out more in our free online vocation test.
