Claudio Rech: The logistics specialist will not be his last degree

Claudio Rech realized shortly after completing his basic training as a carpenter in 2010 that he wanted something different. Even then, it was clear to him that he was drawn in a different direction, that he didn't want to work exclusively as a craftsman. However, at the age of 20, he didn't know exactly what he wanted to achieve. At least at the time. But a lot has happened in Claudio Rech's life since then.

Time for change

After Claudio Rech had worked for several years as a temporary employee in various building trades and as a stand-in for warehouse work, blind repairs, forwarding tasks, as a parcel dispatcher and delivery man, he decided to spend around 5 months in Australia. He got to know English, other people and himself better and decided to give his life a new direction.

The commercial diploma follows

And so, a few months after returning from Australia, Claudio Rech attended further training for the VSH office management diploma and completed the VSH commercial diploma immediately afterwards. He wanted to move away from the trades and into the office. But somehow things turned out differently than planned. Fortunately for Claudio Rech, as he sees it today.

New challenge: logistics

Claudio Rech found the job search a little more difficult than expected. He didn't find the job he wanted and knew that it was mainly due to his lack of experience in administration. This bothered him a little, but not for too long, as he quickly found an industry that fascinated him even more: logistics.

Arrived at the right place

After a few months at ProMinent AG in warehouse management and logistics, he moved to Migros Zurich Herdern, his current employer, at the end of 2018. As a day-to-day manager in the rail division, he is now responsible for coordinating and planning employees' work. And employee management is exactly what Claudio Rech is passionate about.

Team leadership, encouraging employees, but also challenging them to the point where they get the best out of themselves and, despite everything, always remaining a fair, collegial manager - these are Claudio Rech's leadership skills. And he wants to continue to develop them.

The training starts

For this reason, he began his further training as a logistics specialist with a federal certificate at the beginning of 2020, which he will complete in September 2021. He has already held the SSC certificate in his hands since fall 2020.

But it's not the certificate - and soon the specialist certificate - that Claudio Rech benefits from in his day-to-day work. It is the tangible learning content of the further training that makes his day-to-day work easier. Quality management, employee management, warehouse logistics and occupational safety - he can apply the knowledge he has acquired in all these areas in his day-to-day work. And it is precisely in this way that he is able to better internalize the learning content.

As soon as he has completed his further training as a logistics specialist with a federal certificate at GS1, he would like to be able to prove himself within the company. Preferably as a team leader in a higher position. And perhaps later as a supply chain manager. Claudio Rech knows that this will certainly require some further training, but he is already looking forward to it. After all, he has finally found his career path.

As a trained warehouse clerk, Martin Müller held various positions in logistics, where he was responsible for receiving and issuing goods, warehouse logistics, order picking, stocktaking and disposal logistics. In his current job in the Logistics & Stacks department of the Swiss National Library, he is responsible for picking customer orders, returning books to the stacks, managing new acquisitions and revisions in the collections, as well as maintaining databases, collating periodical titles and providing first-level support as a super-user in the event of IT problems.

His keen interest in the ever-changing challenges in logistics and the career prospects across all sectors led Martin Müller to decide to undertake extensive further training in this area and increase his market value.

First SSC certificate basic competencies BP, then logistics specialist with federal certificate

Obtaining the SwissSupplyChain SSC Basic Competencies BP certificate was the first step on his further education path, which provided him with comprehensive skills in the areas of finance and accounting, quality management, economics, supply chain management, self-management and leadership as well as project management. This course was the first part of his further training, which he continued in the preparatory course for the federal professional examination (BP) to become a logistics specialist with a federal certificate. This course focuses on materials management, warehouse logistics, distribution logistics, procurement logistics, standards and systems, waste disposal and recycling, occupational safety, logistics processes, process management and production logistics. Martin Müller passed the federal professional examination and was awarded the federal certificate.

After completing further training as a logistics specialist with a federal certificate, Martin Müller quickly realized the benefits of the training. Not only did his work colleagues react very positively to his newly acquired skills and perceive him as a motivated specialist, but his professional thinking and actions are still strongly influenced by the content of the courses today. Entrepreneurial structures and interrelationships in very different contexts are now more visible to him and allow him to use his newly acquired skills in a more targeted and profitable way. He is considering the possibility of soon working as a trainer or sub-project manager, where he can make full use of his skills and new and exciting challenges await him.

Vasilios Andre Kentis, EFZ logistics specialist, prospective logistics specialist with federal certificate

Aspiring logistics specialist Ex-professional footballer with great ambition

Vasilios Kentis
Vasilios Kentis

As a former professional footballer with Aris Saloniki in the Greek Super League, Vasilios Kentis knows exactly what it means to go full throttle and fight for your goals. The Greek-born player with a Swiss mother had to give up his football career at the age of 24 due to injury and make a new life plan. Initially, this was not so easy for him, as he had devoted himself entirely to sport after graduating from high school. But after retiring from active football in 2010 and completing his military service in Greece, he decided to come to Switzerland in 2011. And he did so without any significant knowledge of German, but with a strong will.

He started as a temp at UPS and then at Le Patron, where he was offered a permanent position after a short time. No doubt also because he did everything he could to improve his German language skills, first obtaining the German B1 certificate and then the B2 two years later. But Kentis didn't just want to improve his language skills, he also wanted to develop professionally, so in 2015 he began training as an EFZ logistics technician, which he completed two years later. This qualification also enabled him to improve his professional position and become a warehouse / outgoing goods line manager at Le Patron.

In this position, he is now responsible for the timely processing of daily business in the high-bay warehouse and ensures that the right customer receives the right goods at the right time in the outgoing goods department. Kentis has a team of 8 employees to ensure that all of this actually works satisfactorily every day. Initially, this was not easy for the now 32-year-old, as he openly admits, as he went from being a colleague to a supervisor. However, Kentis has adapted well to his role, is able to assert himself and sometimes supports unpopular decisions.

To enable him to perform his management role even better in future, Vasilios Kentis decided to start further training at GS1 Switzerland to become a logistics specialist with a federal certificate. Although he will not complete this until 2020, he can already see the benefits he has gained from this course. He has gained more confidence in day-to-day business and dealing with customers and employees, has been able to expand his leadership skills and also feels more professionally confident. He attributes all of this not least to the lecturers, who have a great deal of practical experience and therefore deliver the lessons in a varied and practical way.

Although his professional examination is still to come, Kentis is already thinking about further training. In addition to another German certificate, this time at level C1, he is aiming for a management position in logistics, where he will primarily be dealing with young professionals. Further training to become a vocational trainer for inter-company courses in logistics could be one way of supporting and training apprentices and making it easier for them to start their career after their apprenticeship. Vasilios Kentis wants to have taken this next career step in the next 3 to 5 years at the latest.

The logistics specialist on the road to success

Tarik Jahic

After successfully completing his apprenticeship as an EFZ logistics technician at HUG AG and 10 months of service with the Swiss army, Tarik Jahic was offered a temporary position as a logistics technician at Pilatus Flugwerke in Stans in March 2015. This position was supposed to be limited to nine months, but Jahic's supervisor converted the temporary contract into a permanent position in June of the same year, so convinced was he of his abilities.

Further training as a logistics specialist with a federal certificate
In 2017, Jahic began further training as a logistics specialist, which he completed a year and a half later with a federal certificate. Even during his training as a logistics specialist, he was able to improve his position within the company and develop internally. And so he no longer holds the position of "Logistics Specialist", but is now "Service Coordinator, Global Spare Parts - General Aviation". In this role, he instructs individual employees on new Pilatus systems, acts as an interface communicator between Engineering, Production, Accounting, Logistics and Purchasing, manages the exchange of knowledge between Stans and the subsidiary in the USA, prepares quotations for services and spare parts and processes orders, consolidates large deliveries, optimizes logistics disruptions and minimizes quality reports for improved supply chain management.

Gain leadership experience in supply chain management
In the fall of 2018, Tarik Jahic nevertheless decided to expand his skills even further and prepare for the Higher Professional Examination (HFP) for Supply Chain Manager with a federal diploma at GS1. The focus of the further training is on supply chain management, IT, leadership and strategic tasks. He will have completed this course in 2020. His aim with the course is to gain management experience in supply chain management and initial independent project experience. He would like to work in a retail company, a hospital, the watch industry or a modern industrial company.

Achieving success with determination, ambition and discipline
Tarik Jahic can also very well imagine working as a lecturer in the field of logistics / SCM. In the long term. And only once he has completed the appropriate further training, according to the plan of the 25-year-old, who is successfully taking one career step after another with discipline, ambition and determination.
