What are the main disadvantages of the Passerelle?
The Passerelle Ergänzungsprüfung is the bridge to university, FIT or the University of Teacher Education for people with a Federal Vocational Baccalaureate or Specialized Baccalaureate. It comprises the subjects mathematics, German, English or French, humanities (history, geography) and natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics) and only takes one year.
The main disadvantages of the Passerelle are
- The Passerelle Ergänzungsprüfung is not equivalent to the Baccalaureate. Abroad, you will therefore only have access to universities that recognize this combination of certificates. If you would like to study abroad, find out about the admission requirements; you may have to make up for the Baccalaureate for adults. A numerus clausus may also prevent access to the desired degree course.
- Lessons take place over two semesters on two to five days/half days. If you work part-time, you either need a good level of prior knowledge or good discipline, learning ability and self-organization. Nevertheless, the intensive time can also put a strain on your private life.
- The range of subjects is broad, with languages, mathematics, natural sciences and humanities, and can be overwhelming for some students. You have to stay on the ball in all subjects.
- The Passerelle is associated with high costs of around CHF 10,000 to CHF 22,000. The costs are not subsidized in all cantons of residence. Enquire about subsidies at the education department of your canton of residence or directly with the providers.
- The examination pressure for the Passerelle Ergänzungsprüfung is high, as all subjects must be delivered to the point. Not all schools offer internal examinations, i.e. examinations that are held on their own premises and with their own teachers. The providers themselves can determine which literary works are examined in the language subjects and which calculators are permitted for the examination. This can reduce the pressure of the examination. However, only schools that are recognized by the Swiss Baccalaureate Commission (SMK) can conduct external examinations. The external examinations are conducted by examiners on behalf of the SMK or SERI at locations designated by the SMK. Anyone who wishes to take the examination without attending a preparatory course is also admitted to the supplementary examination.
The Passerelle Ergänzungsprüfung enables access to all Bachelor's degree programs at Swiss universities (Uni, FIT) and Universities of Teacher Education. A degree opens up a wide range of career opportunities, promotion prospects, job security and better earning potential.
