Hospital secretaries work in hospitals and doctors' surgeries, where they carry out administrative and organizational tasks independently. They have commercial skills and in-depth knowledge of the healthcare and hospital sector. They support their superiors in all matters and form the interface between customers and patients, employees, management and other healthcare facilities.

Relevance:The hospital secretariat is an information, communication and coordination center and represents the company to the outside world. As the first point of contact for patients and cooperating institutions, hospital secretaries have an influence on the image and success of the company. With their combination of commercial and medical skills, they find numerous vacancies on the job market in hospitals (departmental, medical and executive secretariats, administration, HR), private medical practices, group practices and nursing homes as well as insurance companies and health insurance funds.

Activity:Hospital secretaries have a wide range of tasks. Hospital secretaries provide information, handle correspondence, process patient and business documents and organize filing, prepare medical reports and protocols from a dictaphone, arrange and coordinate appointments, receive patients, record their data in the IT system and process invoices and health insurance inquiries. In smaller medical practices, they sometimes also create presentations and graphics or maintain the website.

Education:Training to become a hospital secretary is not standardized and concludes with the school's own diploma. Most schools work closely with hospital associations and the Swiss Commercial Association (SKV).

At some schools it is possible to obtain a diploma that is uniformly regulated and recognized by the Association of Swiss Hospitals, Clinics and Nursing Institutions (H+, formerly VESKA).

Learning content:In addition to commercial skills (e.g. accounting, German, legal knowledge, IT application and communication), the various hospital secretary training courses generally impart knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, pathology, pharmacology/pharmacology, medical correspondence, hospital and practice administration/organization as well as social and health insurance.
