Computer Scientist HF (formerly Technician HF Computer Science): take on demanding specialist and project management tasks

Computer scientists HF (formerly technicians HF Informatik) develop programs and plan and implement IT solutions. In this way, they implement the IT strategy of the company or its customers. Their tasks also include analyzing and optimizing business processes, IT resources and their use. In larger companies, they usually specialize in an area such as systems engineering, application development or technical IT. Admission to the HF IT course (formerly HF IT technician) is open to people with 3 years of basic vocational training in the fields of IT, electronics and electrical engineering or with a baccalaureate or other upper secondary level qualification. At least 1 year of professional experience, knowledge of English and mathematics are also required.

Note: Since fall 2022, the HF technician courses (formerly "Techniker HF Fachrichtung") have been given a separate framework curriculum and a new title for each specialization. For example, the "HF IT technician" course is now called "HF computer scientist". In addition, the specializations Application Development, Systems Engineering and Computer Engineering have been abolished.

Computer Scientist HF (formerly Technician HF Computer Science): Competent manager or project manager

Computer scientists HF (formerly computer science technicians HF) manage small and medium-sized IT projects in their company or department. IT technicians develop, realize and implement new IT solutions and install IT infrastructures. They organize work and plan, manage and control the available resources. The course to become an IT technician HF (formerly Techniker HF Informatik) can be completed in four specializations over 6 - 7 semesters part-time or 4 semesters full-time:

  • Application development
  • System technology
  • Computer engineering
  • Interactive media

In larger companies, computer scientists HF usually specialize in one of these areas. IT technicians evaluate the needs and requirements of programs and applications. They identify implementation options, taking into account operational, technical and economic aspects. They take care of maintenance, functional tests and data protection.

The following basic knowledge is taught during the course:

  • System architecture
  • Operating systems
  • Networks
  • Databases
  • Web and software engineering

With this knowledge, IT technicians can design networks, server and client infrastructures and technically optimize their use. They are able to ensure secure IT operations in companies. The practice-oriented, technical course of study subsequently enables further specialization in specialist areas or through diploma courses.
